Cold plunge dimensions, tub by tub
A cold plunge tub is a tub you fill with cold water and sit or lie in, and its size decides three things: where it goes, what it weighs, and whether you fit. The table has the twelve tubs we have specs for. If you want our picks and not the measurements, they are in the best cold plunge tubs.
We have not measured these tubs. Every size and capacity below is the maker’s or the seller’s own figure.
| Tub | Footprint | Height | Stated capacity | Empty weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Cold Pod Standard | 29.5 in round | 29.5 in | 85 gal | 7.7 lb |
| Bubplay Ice Bath XL | 31.5 in round | 29.5 in | 105 gal | 7.9 lb |
| VEVOR 90 gallon | 31.5 in round | 29.5 in | 90 gal | 8.2 lb |
| The Pod Company Ice Pod Pro | 32 in round | 30 in | 110 gal | 8 lb |
| The Cold Pod XL | 35.4 in round | 29.5 in | 116 gal | 11.2 lb |
| Ice Barrel 300 | 35.5 in round | 30.5 in | 77 gal | 61 lb |
| Lifepro NordPod | 36.6 in round | 29.5 in | 102 gal | 6 lb |
| JUGRFIT tub with chiller | 53 × 32 in | 24 in | 121 gal | Not stated for the tub |

Round or long, upright or lying down
A round tub takes about three feet of floor each way, and you sit in it with your knees up and the water at your neck. A long tub takes about five feet by two and a half, and in most of them you lie back.
Choose a round tub if
Floor space is short. Every round tub here fits in a square a little over three feet each way, and the soft ones fold into a bag. You sit upright, so your head stays out unless you duck.
Choose a long tub if
You want to stretch your legs and get your shoulders under without folding up. It needs a clear strip about five and a half feet long, and it holds more water to keep cold.
The Ice Barrel 500 is the exception. It has a long footprint and the tallest sides here, at 42.1 in, and you sit upright in it on a moulded seat. Our Ice Barrel 500 review covers how that works for tall people.
Height matters when you climb in. The round tubs and the Ice Barrel 300 stand about 30 in high, which is a high step over the rim. The Long Pod is 21 in.
The types themselves are compared on our pages about portable ice baths, inflatable cold plunges and cold plunge barrels.
How many gallons a cold plunge tub really holds
Most home tubs state between 77 and 126 gallons. The figure is worth checking, because four of the twelve state more water than their own dimensions can hold.
A round tub is a cylinder, and a gallon is 231 cubic inches. Work out the volume from the stated size and you have the most the tub could hold filled to the brim, with walls of no thickness. The real figure is lower.
| Tub | Stated capacity | Most its size can hold | |
|---|---|---|---|
| VEVOR inflatable | 216 gal | About 155 gal | Overstated |
| The Pod Company Ice Pod Pro | 110 gal | 104 gal | Overstated |
| Bubplay Ice Bath XL | 105 gal | 100 gal | Overstated |
| Lifepro NordPod | 102 gal | 99 gal | Overstated |
| The Cold Pod Standard | 85 gal | 87 gal | A brim-full figure |
| VEVOR 90 gallon | 90 gal | 100 gal | Plausible |
| The Cold Pod XL | 116 gal | 126 gal | Plausible |
| The Pod Company Long Pod | 126 gal | 152 gal | Plausible |
| JUGRFIT tub with chiller | 121 gal | 176 gal | Plausible |
The VEVOR inflatable is the one that matters. Its stated 216 gallons is 60 gallons more than the inside of the tub can hold by our maths, so size a chiller or count your ice from 155.
The three rigid tubs pass easily. The Ice Barrel 300, the Ice Barrel 500 and The Plunge state far less water than their outer size would hold, because the walls are thick insulation. That gap is what you pay for.
Remember that you take up room too. A full tub spills when you get in, so the water you plunge in is always less than the stated capacity.
What a full cold plunge tub weighs
Water weighs 8.34 lb a gallon, so the water is nearly all of the weight. A soft pod that weighs 8 lb in its bag weighs over 900 lb on your floor.
| Tub | Filled weight | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ice Barrel 300 | 700 lb | Maker |
| The Cold Pod Standard | 717 lb | Our maths |
| VEVOR 90 gallon | 759 lb | Our maths |
| Lifepro NordPod | 857 lb | Our maths |
| Bubplay Ice Bath XL | 884 lb | Our maths |
| Ice Barrel 500 | 886 lb | Maker |
| The Pod Company Ice Pod Pro | 925 lb | Our maths |
| The Cold Pod XL | 979 lb | Our maths |
| The Plunge | 1,020 lb | Maker |
| The Pod Company Long Pod | 1,068 lb | Our maths |
Two tubs are left out. The JUGRFIT listing gives a weight for the whole kit, not the tub, and its 121 gallons of water alone is about 1,010 lb. The VEVOR inflatable weighs about 1,320 lb at the 155 gallons its size allows.
Will you fit?
Makers give a maximum height for most tubs. Where owners have reported on fit, they are less generous.
| Tub | Fits, by the maker or seller | What owners say |
|---|---|---|
| Ice Barrel 300 | Up to 6 ft | A 6 ft owner sits with the water at his jawline |
| JUGRFIT tub with chiller | Up to 6 ft 5 in | No reports found |
| The Pod Company Ice Pod Pro | Up to 6 ft 7 in | A 6 ft 1 in owner calls it cramped. A 6 ft 2 in owner can dunk |
| Bubplay Ice Bath XL | Up to 6 ft 7 in | No reports found |
| Lifepro NordPod | Up to 6 ft 7 in | No reports found |
| The Plunge | Up to 6 ft 8 in | Not read |
| Ice Barrel 500 | Up to 6 ft 9 in | Tight above about 6 ft 3 in on the built-in seat |
| The Pod Company Long Pod | Up to 6 ft 9 in | No reports on fit |
| VEVOR inflatable | Up to 6 ft 9 in | No reports found |
A round tub about 32 in across rated for 6 ft 7 in means that person fits with their knees against their chest. If you are over 6 ft and want to sit comfortably, take the maker’s figure down by a few inches or choose a long tub.
The VEVOR 90 gallon’s listing says it suits people “under 6.9 ft”, then adds “especially medium and smaller frames”. Believe the second half.
Work out any tub’s capacity yourself
You can check a capacity claim in a minute with the size from the listing.
- Get the inside size in inches. Use the inside figures if the maker gives them. The outer size gives you a ceiling.
- Find the volume. For a round tub, multiply 3.14 by half the width, by half the width again, by the height. For a long tub, multiply length by width by height.
- Divide by 231. That is the cubic inches in a US gallon, and the answer is the gallons to the brim.
- Take some off. You fill below the rim, and your body displaces water, so you plunge in less than the brim figure.
Take the Ice Pod Pro at 32 in across and 30 in high. That is 3.14 × 16 × 16 × 30, which is 24,115 cubic inches. Divide by 231 and you get 104 gallons, six short of the 110 its maker states.
Once you know the gallons, you know the ice. Our guide to how much ice an ice bath needs has the sum.
Common questions
What size is a standard cold plunge tub?
There is no standard. The common size is a round soft pod about 32 in across and 30 in high holding around 100 gallons. Long tubs run 53 to 67 in.
How much space do you need for a cold plunge?
For a round tub, a square a little over three feet each way, plus room to climb in. For a long tub, a strip about five and a half feet by three. A chiller sits beside the tub and needs floor of its own.
How deep is a cold plunge tub?
Most are 24 to 30 in high, and you fill them below the rim. The Long Pod is the shallowest here at 21 in and the Ice Barrel 500 the deepest at 42.1 in.
